Aspire Ryde

We're fundraising to put solar panels on Aspire Ryde and five other organisations working on causes close to Prince's heart. Will you chip in to help them out?

Aspire Ryde is a community centre on the sunny Isle of Wight.

Ryde is not a wealthy area. In some parts, less than half of residents own a car, so local facilities are essential. Until recently, Ryde didn’t have any community centres at all. That’s until 2014, when a local group saved an at-risk church building, transforming it into a hub for the community.

2000 people come through their doors every week. With creative workshops, tea dances, fitness and wellbeing classes, after-school signing, and a Men in Sheds group, they've got the whole town involved.  Aspire Ryde prides itself in offering something for everyone - they work with the homeless, people with mental health difficulties, the elderly, people who are lonely, kids, grown ups… anyone and everyone.

Aspire Ryde may be an old building, but getting solar panels is part of a long line of upgrades to the old church building. They’ve already got a cafe, a bowling alley and the Isle of Wight’s only community recording studio in there! Solar will offer crucial savings on their electricity bills that they can put right back into their community work.

They have a pretty big roof, and they want to fill it with solar - these solar panels are just the first step. As project leader Heath Monaghan told us: “We see this as the pilot project for something that could produce community energy to share eventually with our neighbouring flats & school, we want to show the community just what impact solar power can have.”
