Carbon City Zero

A deck-building card game where players race to create the first zero carbon city.

10:10 are working with games experts at Manchester Metropolitan University to create a brand new card game that gets people talking about cleaning up our energy system. That means taking the carbon out of the electricity we use in our homes, schools and workplaces as well as the heat we use to warm our buildings.

As a newly appointed city mayor, you’ll be tasked with creating a carbon neutral city. It sounds easy, but you'll soon discover that your carbon budgets are hard to balance. Can you hit the zero carbon target before your rival city mayors?

Carbon City Zero is a deck-building game for 2-4 players (or 4-8 if you play in pairs), taking you on a journey to a new, sustainable city; whether you’re battling fuel poverty, setting up green mortgages, lobbying national government or raising public awareness (our office-mate Steve swears by a strategy of building large factories, we’re not sure he’s quite got it yet...). As city mayor you begin the game with limited resources and heading for a climate catastrophe. Each turn you will develop your city's infrastructure by selecting new pathways for development. Your mayorship will not be easy, in building your city of the future you must contend with local opposition, bad press, funding cuts, and fossil fuel lobbyists.

The race to become the first zero carbon city is on...

We have made every effort to ensure that Carbon City Zero does not have a negative impact on the environment. The game will be printed in the UK by Ivory Graphics, an FSC certified company, who ensure all of their products have the lowest impact on the environment as possible.

So that we’re not adding to the big problem of plastic pollution, this game will be fully reusable, replayable, and recyclable. We won’t be using any cello-wrap, and we’ll be asking gamers to find their own tokens for the carbon tracker (buttons, coins, and broken toys all work well). We’ll also send out all copies of the game using eco-friendly packaging.

Carbon City Zero has been designed to be as accessible as possible, and during the design process we had the game tested by accessibility experts Meeple Like Us. Full card text is available on request for anyone that may find this useful.

Any profits from this game will be used to buy additional sets of Carbon City Zero, which we will then distribute to schools and community organisations across the UK, free of charge.

You’ll be able to order your own copy of Carbon City Zero through our Kickstarter page, which will be launching on 20th September. Sign up to 10:10 and follow us on social media so we can send you the link when it goes live.
